I always use them so the silver carabiner is on the bolt or gear (metal to metal) and the coloured (blue or red) carabiner is on the rope. This stops any sharp edges forming on the carabiner that the rope runs over. Please inspect all climbing gear before use and don't store these around anything sharp.
